First impressions are important. And orientation sets the tone and lays the foundation. It’s one thing to quiz sophomores during the application process or chat with prospective classmates on Slack. It’s another to come face-to-face and see how teammates react when faced with real challenges. So far, Alexis Flynn is not disappointed with her classmates at the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler School of Business. He knows. After all, Flenn is the “Triple Heel” for us. Already holding a bachelor’s degree (biology) and a master’s degree (physiology) at the university, he entered the fourth year of his MD. During his MBA, Flenn saw the “innovative thinking” and “leadership qualities” that were hallmarks of his UNC experience.

“UNC Canaan-Flagler’s best story was during a team dynamics exercise with our older groups. A group of 12 was tasked with transporting ping pong balls into PVC tubes using only our minds and pencils. The entire exercise was enlightening, because I witnessed our team’s resilience to obstacles and the evolution of thought and strategy as we ultimately mastered the task.
Aidan McConnell jokes that his introduction to Cannon-Flagler is “hanging by a thread – literally”. At the Honorary Dean’s Scholars Retreat, she participated in a team-building exercise on the Flying Squirrel High Ropes Course. Here, classmates work together to push each other 50 feet in the air, so peers can experience what it’s like to hold onto a rope and fly like Superman. When McConnell’s feet were on the ground, his classmates were equally supportive.
“Coworkers I’ve only known for a few hours during orientation are already coordinating study groups, lending their cars to help others get to the McCall building, and helping new international students adjust to life in Chapel Hill. it’s part of a stimulating, collaborative community.”
Elsewhere, it might be called “Southern Hospitality,” but Chapel Hill has a term for it: “The Carolina Way.” In sports, the term is defined by the “play hard, play smart, play together” ethos. In the classroom and in the community, the Carolina Way represents a supportive and inclusive community that is always committed to individual and collective excellence. At Cannon-Flagler, “The Carolina Way” is more than a fluffy slogan. These students have expectations for themselves and their peers.

“They really embrace the spirit of the Carolina Way,” writes Mary Paul Msemwa, who was last at the US Embassy in Tanzania. “Everyone I met showed a genuine interest in me and offered to help me by taking time out of their busy schedule or putting me in touch with a resource that I could use or help. I already feel like I belong here. UNC MBA students are highly motivated, but they also know how to have a great time.
In addition to the collegial culture, Canaan-Flagler Business School has two of the best MBA programs in healthcare and real estate. Needless to say, the program is rich in resources. It has returned to being one of the nation’s leading research universities, while also hosting two top-ranked undergraduate business and online MBA programs. The program is experiencing impressive growth. At the graduate level, enrollment has doubled over the past decade. In two years, the school will cut the ribbon on a 140,000-square-foot building that will allow it to double its undergraduate enrollment. That’s not counting Kenan-Flagler expanding its Executive MBA program to Charlotte’s Legacy Tower!
Momentum attracts talent. The class of 2024 is full of highly qualified and experienced students. Look at Abdurahman. He managed a gas and oil drilling project producing one of Pakistan’s largest gas reserves, from feasibility and planning before moving to drilling.
“I led a team of 14 to safely drill part of a gas well that led to a gas discovery in northern Pakistan,” Rehman said. The discovery was celebrated across the country as Pakistan faced a severe energy crisis and it was the best farewell I could have asked for before starting my MBA.
Forging A New Path For Leadership
The numbers also reflect the storyline for the Class of 2024: They’re efficient and impressive. Mary Paul Msemwa served as liaison between the American and Tanzanian governments, resulting in $8.7 million in tax refunds. At Imperial PFS, Raquel Argenal Mathieu managed a $143 million book of insurance loans – one of its largest operations on the West Coast. Ridvon Abdulsalam entered history. He worked on a $280 million corporate bond issue – the largest in the history of Nigeria, which has the largest GDP and population on the African continent. As a Deloitte consultant, Lindsey Buchler led the reorganization of the Shared Services Center, which resulted in $3 million in labor cost savings.
“We provided recommendations to client executives through quantitative analysis that aligned the future state of shared enterprise services with the overall corporate strategy, resulting in the successful launch of the Shared Services Center. Management recognized the success of this and other projects, which enabled the Trust to promote me to the position of Senior Consultant and lead a number of other impactful projects.
Hemadri Singh Kuntal also made a name for himself as a healthcare IT consultant at Deloitte. During the pandemic, his sister fought Covid-19 as a doctor in charge at a frontline hospital. And Singh Kuntal soon joined the fray on another front. “I led a team of three client executives and two consultants to proactively implement logic-based flags for potential COVID-19 patients in the electronic health record (EHR). This feature is used by all medical professionals working in over 800 hospitals/clinics in the United States ensure that employees are alerted to potential COVID-19 patients in or around them.
Alexis Flynn said she wore “different hats” at UNC medical school, including class president. Icelander Hilda Kristjansdottir has been promoted to assistant vice president at Barclays, serving as a strategic financial partner in the London office. On Amazon, Irasema Gonzalez-Gutierrez

It aims to mentor women in Amazon’s North American South Central (NASC) region and launch inclusive events during the pandemic, such as the first NASC “Women @ Amazon” virtual conference. In a short period of time, due to the exponential improvement of women in the warehouse, Amazon recognized the importance of the Women in Practice initiative and made our team a 65% female leader in the fulfillment center network.
The classroom outside the office is equally eclectic. Aidan McConnell worked as a ballroom dance instructor for many years. Her favorite dance? Carolina Shagg, of course. Hemadri Singh Kuntal’s hobby is skipping rope: in 2 minutes he can alternate eight styles of skipping rope. Carlos L. Pérez-de la Rosa, who has a master’s degree in special education and educational leadership, wore mittens like Forrest Gump as a child. At the same time, Abdurrahman can speak four languages - he uses them with different audiences.
The 2021-2022 application period marks the high water mark for the Kenan-Flagler MBA. During the cycle, the school received 1,975 applications, a 32% increase from last year (though more in line with the 1,903 applications received for the Class of 2022). This year’s class also represents a return to normality after the devastation caused during the reception. Two years ago, the number of classes reached 344 students, in 2024 it was reduced to 243 students. This equates to 250 full-time MBAs. Smaller class sizes led to another change: Cannon-Flagler became more selective. In 2019, after about 53% of applicants were accepted, this figure dropped to 36%.
That’s how you’ll find MBAs who bring high GMAT scores to Chapel Hill. The Class of 2024 averaged a GMAT of 706, a full 10 points higher than last year (with a score of 680-730 in the 85% range). GRE score was 319
