In the past three years, more students than ever have attended trade schools, also known as vocational schools or technical schools. There are several things that contribute to its popularity. One of the most obvious reasons is that the cost of college continues to rise. The cost of college has increased by approximately 300% in four decades. Additionally, jobs are becoming more competitive for those pursuing traditional college degrees, and many fields now require more academic credentials than ever. These factors, along with several others, are causing people to turn to non-traditional options, such as online colleges and trade schools.

Prior to this boom, the popularity of vocational schools had been steadily declining for the past twenty years. Vocational programs were separated from high school, there was increasing pressure for higher education, and a growing stigma around the concept of professional universities. There is still a lot of stigma attached to this great opportunity, but don’t be fooled. Trade school is a solid investment.

The prevailing reality in America is that there are more skilled jobs than there are skilled workers to fill those positions. The lack is almost unimaginable. For example, there are millions of job openings in the construction industry, and this is just one of many skilled trades. Vocational programs are available in fields like engineering, environmental science, health care, plumbing, and more.

The Federal Pell Grant is a subsidy provided by the government to students who need extra money to pay for college. To qualify for this grant, you must not have earned your Bachelor’s degree and must demonstrate financial need. Financial need is calculated by comparing your income to your expenses. Most Pell Grants are awarded to students whose families earn less than $30,000 per year, but they may still be eligible if they exceed that line. This type of subsidy is non-refundable.

This is a type of secondary grant you can receive in addition to your Pell Grant. Students with an estimated family contribution of zero are considered first for this award and grants are awarded continuously based on financial need until all available funds are exhausted. These can be applied to trade schools and, like the Pell Grant, do not need to be repaid. The amount can range from a few hundred dollars to $4,000, but the most common amount awarded is $1,000. All sources of financial aid and other funds are considered to determine your eligibility.

In addition to regular financial aid, you can also get scholarships for trade schools, which we’ll talk about in the next section.
