Inspired by his dreams of working in both medicine and engineering, Iniguez Erunes sought to combine these two passions as a means of giving back to society, serving the poor in the countryside.
“My grandparents live in a village and many people live in poor living conditions. – Most of them cannot go to a hospital or go to a big city for medical care. My grandfather was my biggest inspiration to pursue my degree.”
In her senior year of high school, Iniguez Erunes learned more about medicine and the field of bioengineering, when she decided to pursue a career in biomedical engineering in the United States.
When asked why he chose ASU, Iniguez Erunes said, “I chose ASU because it offered me some great scholarships and allowed me to keep what I earned in the community college. I graduated from the engineering program at I was very interested in the major, and I liked the decision to transfer to this great campus.”

Iniguez Erunes will complete his BSE in May 2022 in the Biological Engineering program at the Fulton School of Engineering. Here, he talks about his journey to ASU and his plans after graduation.
Answer: I chose my major in my last semester of high school. During the last months of my school experience, I wasn’t sure if I would continue my studies in Mexico or the United States, so I decided to study biomedical engineering in the United States. During that time, my grandfather battled cancer and its treatment. I wanted to be a part of it and learn as much as I could about it. When my grandfather was diagnosed with kidney and prostate cancer, the limited treatment options made it impossible because he is a high-risk patient. This has always been a great motivation for me and allowed me to understand the importance of modern technologies to treat such diseases and reduce the limited treatment options, and I plan to work towards the goal of improving the medical field.
Q: Were you involved in any clubs or organizations at your community college? If so, please share which ones and how your contribution has impacted your community’s college experience.
A: Volunteering has been a part of my extracurricular activities since I was in high school. While in community college, I was a part of Phi Theta Kappa and that helped me get involved in events, as well as the club’s vice president of fundraising for the Douglas Chapter at Cochise College, leadership skills and experience. get It taught me that small changes can have a big impact, and it helped me become more involved in my community. Being an active member of many clubs such as Phi Theta Kappa, Disaster Relief Club, and Research Club, I participated in several activities. Events I participated in: Blood Drive, Fire Pit, Relay for Life, Regional Conference, Highway Cleanup, and Hamburger Sale. I participated in a research project for the Special Topics and Applications of Biology course.

Volunteering is an act of kindness because it is something you do without expecting anything in return; it is a very valuable experience. We learn to give and be ready for the society we live in, different people and different situations. Also, during my last year at the community college, I participated in the Habitat for Humanity program. This project consisted of helping to rebuild houses for those in need. This project took place in San Diego, where two different clubs came to town for a rich experience working together. There was a flood in the area and many families were damaged and their houses were also damaged. We collaborated with the group and did the walls, the roof cavities (and) exterior painting, etc. We are willing to repair such damages. We learned how to work with different tools and wore protective clothing to help with construction. On that trip, we were part of the San Diego Coast Guard Project, whose goal was to collect as much as possible from Mission Beach, which would help us record which litter was the most common. and let people know about it. In this way, they help keep the beach clean and support the community with awareness.
A: What I like most is campus life, the diversity it offers and all the fun activities. I had the opportunity to live off campus, but still close enough to experience the life of a college student, which I believe is an important aspect of any college student’s life. I like the classes and the friendship of the teachers as well as my friends. I have made great friends here that I will cherish forever.
A: I would recommend that they consider their specific program needs. It would be a great advantage if they know what they need to do before transferring, or better yet, take the necessary courses at their community college if possible. This is all I can offer from my experience. I didn’t know the prerequisites for the important classes, so I’m taking a year to graduate, so it’s really important that they get into that aspect. Use ASU’s transfer resources, such as MyPath2ASU, to track your successfully transferred courses.
A: My career goals are to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering at Arizona State University. After graduation, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in the 4+1 program offered by ASU. I would rather be part of clinical research than go into industry. Of course, plans may change, but I would like to pursue a research field once I graduate.
