An unconventional and compassionate guide to how to be an early bird who wakes up at 5:00 a.m. every day Sebastian Royo offers lessons on how Clark University absorbed the interactive media design and gaming programs of the former Baker College.

In March 2021, the chairman of the Baker College Board of Trustees announced that the institution would close its doors due to severe financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a major shock to students, faculty and staff at this private college in Worcester, Massachusetts, whose history dates back to the merger of Leicester Academy, founded in 1784, and Baker Business College, which opened in 1887. Worcester area because of Baker College’s long and influential history in the region and the importance of many academic programs.
Clark University has been a neighbor of Baker for nearly 135 years. The two organizations share a history and deep ties to the Worcester community. Clark’s leadership was determined to help soften the blow, especially for students who needed continuity of learning to complete their degrees. This was the beginning of a plan announced by Clark President David Fithian to establish the Baker School of Design and Technology (BSDT) at Clark, keeping Baker’s interactive media design and gaming programs intact. Ultimately, the transfer of programming was governed by a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Baker College Board of Trustees. The proposed substantive change was approved in April 2021 by the New England Commission on Higher Education, Clark’s accreditor.
In August 2021, BSDT began its first semester as part of Clark University with classes held in two leased buildings on the former Baker College campus site. A total of 179 undergraduate students enrolled in 40 sections, representing 27 unique courses. Another 11 students in the Master of Fine Arts program enrolled in eight sections and five unique courses.
After more than a year, the integration of BSDT in Clark can be considered a great success. Enrollment goals were met, BSDT’s curriculum was aligned with Clark’s, and graduate admissions fully integrated Baker’s programs into a comprehensive graduate admissions portfolio. Our BSDT students achieve expected retention, graduation, and learning outcomes, including outcomes related to their performance in Clark liberal studies courses.

The time between the announcement of Baker closing in March 2021 and the opening of the new Clark School in August 2021 left little time for a lengthy planning and program development process. Indeed, the transition from opportunity to implementation happened faster than is typical of higher education. Several important lessons emerge from the experience.
First, accept that you cannot control the timing of the opportunity and that you must act decisively. For Clark, the opportunity to establish the Baker School was completely unexpected, and the university had little room to consider. Once the decision was made, Fithian moved quickly to engage the university community in the possibility of bringing the Baker program to Clark and negotiated a memorandum of understanding.
Second, make sure the decision is guided by strategic considerations. The old saying “Strategy should drive organizational change, not the other way around” is very true. Clark is finalizing a strategic framework to promote itself as a destination university that offers a transformative liberal arts education and conducts research focused on solving real-world problems, with particular emphasis on four interdisciplinary areas: climate and global change; creative arts, media, design and technology; Life Sciences and Behavioral Issues; and social and urban problems. Through the integration of BSDT, Clark is positioned to strengthen scholarship, pedagogy, and innovation related to the creative arts, media, design, and technology. There was an obvious strategic fit.
Third, promote the involvement of community members and open opportunities for collaboration and growth. The academic programs represented by BSDT were complementary and synergistic with Clark’s existing curriculum and program offerings. For example, the Clark Computer Science Department offers several courses in game design; The English Department offers courses written for digital media; Faculty in the Department of Philosophy work on the ethics of social media and new interactive media platforms; And Clark’s Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise uses gaming techniques and interactive simulations to develop behavioral health applications aimed at young adults with a range of anxiety disorders.

Fourth, ensure organizational alignment and alignment to create operational synergies and reduce potential redundancies and frustrations from the integration process. Clarke decided to establish BSDT on organizational and administrative lines similar to other academic schools at Clarke. Consequently, Clark integrated Baker’s undergraduate and graduate degrees into his own undergraduate and graduate academic structures. The Dean of the Baker School reports administratively to the Office of the Provost and is subject to all general undergraduate and graduate governance review boards, while the School itself has appointed faculty and its own academic leadership.
Fifth, involve faculty in decision-making processes as well as integration processes to ensure buy-in and strengthen shared governance. Clark faculty members were informed early on of Baker’s initiative, and the administration actively engaged them to ensure their support. Once the decision was made, Clark ensured that BSDT faculty were integrated into the university’s common governance system. Full-time Baker Professors are eligible to participate in the Faculty Governance Committee and all faculty votes, and the BSDT coordinates its activities (new
