If you are applying for a federal student loan, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the universal application form that the US Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid uses to determine your eligibility for federal loans and grants.
The state of Arizona also accepts private loans (which are mostly credit-based) from other lenders. If you choose a private loan, you just need to be aware that the application process is far from universal. Each lender will inevitably have its own application process, so make sure you understand how to apply and all eligibility requirements.

Many financial aid opportunities available to ASU students require you to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The federal government uses the FAFSA to determine how much U.S. government aid you are eligible for. But your state government and ASU will also look at the information you include on the FAFSA to determine whether you qualify for state financial aid or institutional aid.
That said, it’s important to note that most ASU scholarships require separate application forms. This is especially true for current ASU students applying for scholarships.
